![]() Republic Records/VMP Essentials B0028578-01 “The End of Day/A New Beginning” galaxy colored vinyl 2LPĮngineered by: Andrew Dawson, Emile Haynie, Anthony Kilhoffer, Dot Da Genius, et al Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon: The End Of Day If you’re a diehard Strokes fan or one who needs the best pressing of every album, this pressing is worth the cash, though a standard EU pressing might serve others just fine. The 180g colored vinyl (split into quarters of red, blue, and tan) is generally quiet, and the special VMP jacket (a laminated tip-on with extensive foil-stamping) feels luxurious (despite the lame drink “recipe” of “1 cheap beer 1 shot of Irish whiskey”). The mix is bright and compressed as is, with Casablancas’ vocals barely audible there isn’t much detail to bring out for a revelatory listen. This VMP reissue, cut by Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound, plated at QRP, and pressed at GZ, is likely the best the album will sound. Still, Room On Fire lacks the melodic immediacy of its predecessor, with more filler and weaker highlights. The Strokes’ musical strengths remained intact, albeit diminished there are some great guitar lines (“Reptilia,” “Under Control”), and lead singer Julian Casablancas’ vivid, personal, and conversational lyrics remained as sharp as ever (“12:51,” “Meet Me In The Bathroom”), with hints at that era’s post-9/11 anxiety (“The End Has No End”). Further, they completely scrapped early sessions with Nigel Godrich and returned to producer Gordon Raphael as rock n’ roll excess kicked in. Between releases, the NYC rock quintet extensively toured, only allotting three months to record the record. Two years after their era-defining debut Is This It, the Strokes’ 2003 sophomore effort Room On Fire dropped to high anticipation whether it lived up to its hype remains debated. There’s an argument that the lack of 3G doesn’t matter so much with a BlackBerry, as the very nature of the system is to package-up and use data in a very efficient way. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that with these toys on board it’s simply a Bold in a smaller, neater package though, as there’s one very important omission: there’s no 3G with the Curve 8900, so data speeds are limited to GPRS or EDGE. With previous Curves you had to choose either GPS (the 8310) or Wi-Fi (the 8320), but the new 8900 includes both. We found that the increased processor speed (now 512MHz) helps keep the user interface really snappy, although at 5mins 25secs our T-Mobile supplied device did seem to take an awfully long time to boot from cold. As well as letting you watch your stock prices fall in tear-inducing clarity, the increased resolution is a great advantage for web pages, navigation, and business applications such as SAP. That’s over twice the resolution of the original Curve, and it even beats the Bold. The clarity of those photos and the cleanliness of the tweaked user interface are both easily appreciated on the 480 x 360 pixel screen. Received emails can be in HTML format, and most attachment formats can be viewed, with Word and Excel also being editable. With BES an email will often arrive on your phone before it appears in Outlook. We tested it with both, and it worked flawlessly. ![]() The Curve 8900 uses the same OS 4.6 platform as the Bold, meaning that it gets a much improved Web browser (with Ajax support), a continuous spell checker, proper support for Excel documents, and a new ‘bedside’ mode which effectively turns the BlackBerry into a very expensive digital clock.Īs with all other BlackBerry handsets, the Curve 8900 can be connected to BIS which polls existing POP3, IMAP, and other email accounts on a regular basis, or BES which is a proper enterprise class push-email system connecting directly to your Exchange, Groupwise or Domino mail servers. The relatively small form factor means that the keypad is narrow, but despite that it’s quite usable and accurate. The design is heavily influenced by its big Bold brother, so it looks great with its black and metal styling, and is a smartphone you won’t feel ashamed to pull from your pocket during a business meeting. It’s slightly slimmer, but otherwise maintains the original Curve’s size and weight. ![]() ![]() This includes back and forward buttons, options to repeat a song or randomize the play order, and to change the playback speed. The controls at the top let you go back to the media selection menu, and to use the built-in search, open a network stream or refresh the current media listing. You can go forward or backward in the video when you move the finger horizontally instead. Sometimes, this switches to brightness controls instead but I could not really figure out when that is happening. To change the volume press a finger on the screen and move it up or down to do so. Video controls are displayed at the bottom of the screen when the video starts to play. Here you can use the slider to move to a specific position, use fast forward or back buttons, pause the video, lock the screen or use various fit and fill options to display the video full screen regardless of orientation. It takes a single tap to play a video from the list. Videos are displayed automatically afterwards in the interface with a thumbnail, their file name, playtime and resolution. Once that is out of the way, you will notice that it will automatically scan your storage for audio and video files. A notification is displayed on first start that informs you that the player is a beta version. Released on August 21, 1987, The $5.98 EP: Garage Days Re-Revisited was initially only available for two years before print runs stopped in 1989. ![]() Moreover, the collection shone a different light on the San Francisco-based thrashers – these kids had more tricks up their sleeves than the breakneck metal the world had seen so far. What materialized from the Garage Days Re-Revisited sessions were faithful yet raw renditions of NWOBHM stalwarts Diamond Head’s “Helpless,” Scottish metalers Holocaust’s “The Small Hours,” synth-punks Killing Joke’s “The Wait,” Welsh metal outfit Budgie’s “Crash Course In Brain Surgery” and a mash-up of “Last Caress” and “Green Hell” by goth punks Misfits. In keeping with the DIY nature of the project, Metallica didn’t waste time reworking their chosen covers into more Metallica-friendly songs. What followed was The $5.98 EP: Garage Days Re-Revisited. Something clicked and they decided to record it. Lead guitarist Kirk Hammett began ripping the riff to Killing Joke’s ‘The Wait’. If Metallica couldn’t move forward with their own material until Hetfield’s arm had healed, they would instead take the songs that influenced them and make them their own. Then, as they hammered through “White Lightning” by little known NWOBHM band Paralex, inspiration hit them. Needing a distraction, drummer Lars Ulrich utilized Newsted’s experience in construction to convert his El Cerrito, California, garage into a rehearsal space. However, early sessions with Newsted had only produced a demo of “Blackened” – which would later appear on … And Justice For All – and frontman James Hetfield broke his arm while skateboarding, bringing an abrupt halt to the writing process. With an appearance at the legendary Monsters Of Rock festival at Donington on the horizon, the pressure was on from their UK record label for new material to coincide with the show. Touring for Master Of Puppets wrapped up in early 1987, leaving the band to finally face up to their grief and figure out what they wanted to do next. Metallica soon recruited Jason Newsted, from Phoenix thrashers Flotsam And Jetsam, sure that Burton would have wanted them to carry on. It was while touring that album that the band was famously involved in a bus crash. It was the musicality he brought to the band that piqued the interest of major labels and became the driving force behind the huge success of Master Of Puppets. The world never witnessed the full potential that lay at the fingertips of Metallica bassist Cliff Burton. To learn where they were heading next in their career, they took it all the way back to the beginning to pay homage to the bands that inspired them to make music their lives. With their stopgap EP, The $5.98 EP: Garage Days Re-Revisited, they found that in order to move forward they needed to look backward. Metallica faced a difficult challenge in 1987. He then spent most of the thirteen episodes crouched in diners with hacker Gavin Orsay trying to locate Rachel, only to exact his master plan in the final episode. Doug started off the season still recovering from Rachel's attack. This was not the only death, but it was the only murder, and it was a slow burn. The political opponents are all still breathing. The ambitious writers got away with their out-of-line remarks. Is it just me, or was this season of Netflix's House of Cards pretty tame? I suppose that's the leash that comes with being the leader of the free world. Nor do Underwood’s occasional pangs of conscience feel in completely keeping with the character’s win-at-all-costs nature. It took a while, but finally Doug killed Rachel Posner on House of Cardsin the season three finale. To his credit, Willimon remains a shrewd observer of modern politics in many respects, and it’s no accident that “House of Cards” frequently mirrors reality, and vice versa - from strained relations with Russia’s authoritarian leader to Underwood seeking to champion a jobs program basically lifted out of the movie “Dave” that’s similar to President Obama’s desire to use federal spending on infrastructure to bolster the economy.Īt the same time, Underwood’s plans to circumvent Congress are a bit too transparent early on, and the first lady’s plot is well played but politically hard to swallow, its homage to the Clintons notwithstanding. The season opens promisingly enough, with the new prez grudgingly engaging in a ceremonial moment that, he sneers, “makes me seem more human.” From there, “Cards” begins rolling along various tracks, with diverse crises arising, and a number of not-created-equal subplots that shouldn’t be spoiled - one involving the first lady (Wright), who desires to be more than just a photo-op figurehead. Being President, after all, comes with a lot of firepower, even if he faces a hostile Congress and the lingering threat of exposure for past transgressions. It’s a misgiving that’s exacerbated by placing both of Underwood’s hands so firmly on the levers of power. Indeed, a lingering criticism of the show is that in a town driven by deception, spin and the quest for power, Frank has lacked a genuinely worthy adversary, with his opponents appearing consistently mismatched in the elaborate chess game he’s been playing. ![]() Those caught up on the first two seasons will know by now that Spacey’s Frank Underwood wheedled and schemed his way from Congress to the vice presidency to the Oval Office, knocking down a surprisingly ineffective assortment of barriers to his ascent. Even then, the first half of Season 3 feels flimsy, having essentially morphed into an inordinately ruthless version of “The West Wing.” Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright remain splendid as the central couple, but with their quest for power having succeeded, series architect Beau Willimon seems forced to resort to unconvincing contortions to maintain the drama. ![]() Still, the series that set Netflix on the path to programming prestige also feels played out, as if it should have retired without seeking a third term. ![]() “ House of Cards” returns, and in terms of classy actors in a high-stakes setting, it’s solidly entertaining. The factory image I prepared will load the new UBoot along with OpentWRT so it's a one step painless process and the recommended method. With the Factory image it's easy to do the conversion/upgrade without soldering and it shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes. ![]() In this case, you load the "Factory" image from the HooToo upgrade menu. In OpenWRT parlance a "Factory" image is the one you use to load OpenWRT on to the device for the first time while it's still running the manufacturer's original software. ![]() Since my initial upgrade, I have studied and now understand the factory HooToo upgrade images and that knowledge has enabled me to create OpenWRT "Factory" images that are compatible with the HooToo factory GUI software. I've found the in-circuit method to be much quicker and easier than TFTP most of the time. I use the "flashrom" app along with the TIAO Tumpa (USB Multi-Protocol Adapter), and one of these: … EBIDX%3AIT. I've discovered that the board is compatible with in-circuit programming of the flash chip using an external FLASH programmer which makes for easy debricking or upgrading of uboot. Again, the pads are on the edge of the board and marked.Ģ. The TM04 requires that you carefully remove the daughter board and then the three screws holding the base board in place. The pads or on the bottom of the board near the edge (see photos). Remove the bottom cover on the TM02 and carefully remove the board. Both devices can be gently pried apart with a very thin screwdriver. The connections are well marked and it's not difficult at all. If you plan on doing a lot of experimenting I recommending this as it's an invaluable tool for configuration, debug, and recover - as long as you can solder the connections without ruining the board. Also, having a serial console connection is very useful as a debug and recovery tool. If you have at least average soldering skills you can solder a 3v USBSerial cable to the board, setup a tftp server and replace it using tftp, then reboot and use that to burn the OpenWRT sysupgrade image to the correct MTD partition using tftp. There are several methods to replace UBoot:ġ. To install OpenWRT on the TM02 I ended up replacing the UBoot bootloader with a version compatible with the OpenWRT partitioning scheme. Unfortunately I received them only after I had already figured them out independently. ![]() They did include the GPIO driver sources and includes though which allowed me to verify that I had got the LED and switch assignments correct. Recently they finally made available a sanitized and seemingly incomplete set of sources on their website (now apparently removed) which I thank them for however there isn't much useful in them. I have been lobbying HooToo to comply with the GPL for a couple of months. Just a note, I'm not affiliated with HooToo in any way and developed this independently. Below are my latest upgrade instructions and how it all works but you'll need to go to the repository to get some of the files. All the files - patches, images, and board photos are over on github at … 02-OpenWRT. In the meantime, I want to share this with the community. (UPDATE: My patchs are now part of the trunk except for the "factory" image which you can get from my github repository - link below). I hope they'll eventually accept them and make this part of the trunk. I've submitted the patches to OpenWRT powers that be and haven't heard anything yet. All works well including the USB port.Īfter some bit of effort to learn how to add a new device to buildroot for trunk (all the wiki docs are for AA), discovering the gpio/led connections on the board, and understanding the HooToo upgrade image format so I could build a "factory" openwrt upgrade image, I've developed a set of patches and images. My patches (here and also in my github respository - link below) have support for both LEDs, the reset button and the slider switch. So far they've all worked well for me with just the chip antenna so I've found no need to modify them yet. An external antenna is easily installed as it has both a proper impedance matching RF front-end as well as a stripline bandpass filter on the board. The wifi works amazingly well considering it only has a chip antenna. The serial console connections are the 4 large pads on the bottom edge - they are marked. Feature set is nearly identical to the 703. It's also considerably smaller and a bit cheaper (I paid $18 free shipping Amazon prime.
